To support students to identify the significance of Mary Glowrey’s life, mission and legacy in the context of the Australian and universal Catholic Church during the late nineteenth and early twentieth century.

What will we ask students to do during their visit:

Listen, explore, identify, discuss, ask questions, wonder, evaluate, justify, make connections

Prior knowledge needed before visit:

Awareness of the basic components and personalities of the Catholic Community in Australia/Victoria during the early decades of the twentieth century is an advantage but not necessary.

An understanding of Catholic terms that could be useful: clergy, parishioners, Archbishop, religious Sisters and Brothers, Archdiocese, mission, vocation, parish and diocese.

During the visit:

Students will have the opportunity to learn about and engage with Mary Glowrey’s life and legacy in an inquiry-based session that is led by Museum staff. Presentations can support particular curriculum needs. Contact the Museum staff to discuss when planning a visit.

Post visit - suggested discussion points:

  • How would you describe Mary Glowrey to someone who has never heard of her? What information or evidence supports this? (What is your source?)
  • What were some of the significant choices Mary Glowrey made when she lived in Australia and in India? List some of these choices and their impact on her live and on others’ lives.
  • Following your visit to the Museum and Cathedral Hall, what do you now know about Catholic society in Victoria in the early twentieth century?
  • How did Mary Glowrey model leadership? Identify how Mary’s leadership was similar or different to another leader you know. Give an example.
  • Identify some of the challenges Mary Glowrey faced at different points in her life. How did she respond and what was the result? Who or what supported her response?
  • How would you describe Mary Glowrey’s Catholic faith? How did she practice and express her faith? Give examples.
  • What is Mary Glowrey’s legacy? Explain with examples.

Activities:

Design the opening scene of a film about Mary Glowrey’s life: set, people, script, direction, date, time, music. How would you ideally like an audience to respond? Which actors or types might you consider casting and why? Cite any films/scenes you have seen that influence or provide an example of your choices. Explain your decisions to another person/group. Ask for feedback.

Prepare a timeline of Mary Glowrey’s time in Australia. Include key events in her life and the wider community, as well as personnel and practices in the Catholic Church, that had an impact on Mary's life.

Read the summaries for Twenty-five of the best  (Melbourne Archdiocese Catholic Schools – MACS- ReSource).

  • Write an entry for Mary Glowrey or
  • compare and contrast Mary Glowrey with another person listed

Mary Glowrey is recognised as a Servant of God by the Catholic Church. Explain what this means. Research if any other Australians have been named Servants of God.
